"A Different Kind of Profession"
Is editing journals a profession? Should it be? Some of the characteristics of traditional professions—professional association, a code of ethics, self- governance, and the like—would benefit editors, authors, and readers. Other characteristics—exclusionary practices and secrecy—would not. If journal editors are to become more professional, we would do well to choose a model that is open to talent and transparent in its workings.
